HP Proliant network adapter teaming software 20: Enhance the functionality of your server and networ

A NIC port from each is Teamed together in a LACP (Satic) Team so the team is looks like a 20gig pipe with 1 MAC address. This is using the latest Intel NIC teaming software (ANS is the name I think). From that I have created 4 VLAN's

However I ran into some further issues. Since I was teaming 2 10gig adapters into a LACP team, across to Nexus 5548's I was creating a 20gig network pipe and then splitting it up with Intel teaming software into 4 VLAN's.

All that said this current version of Windows/Hyper V is lacking compared to VMware. I am moving off of VMware to save $$$ but VMware has teaming nailed down and baked into the OS. I used the same servers/NIC's/LACP with trunked networks and VLAN tagging in VMware and never had an issue. My guess is that they auto QoS under the hood, but I dont have to worry about it.

I actually install the NIC teaming and build my VLAN in the Intel software before I install Hyper V. I have not had a problem yet with network connectivity so I guessing that this is a HP issue? I cant see how it would really make a difference? Also the NIC's I use for VM traffic, are dedicated.

Network adapters are qualified by the network traffic types (see above) they are supported for use with. As you review the Windows Server Catalog, the Windows Server 2022 certification now indicates one or more of the following roles. Before purchasing a server for Azure Stack HCI, you must minimally have at least one adapter that is qualified for management, compute, and storage as all three traffic types are required on Azure Stack HCI. You can then use Network ATC to configure your adapters for the appropriate traffic types.

Not all network adapters from vendors support RDMA. The following table lists those vendors (in alphabetical order) that offer certified RDMA adapters. However, there are hardware vendors not included in this list that also support RDMA. See the Windows Server Catalog to find adapters with the Storage (Standard) or Storage (Premium) qualification which require RDMA support.

If you're using RDMA for Live Migration traffic, ensure that Live Migration traffic can't consume the entire bandwidth allocated to the RDMA traffic class by using an SMB bandwidth limit. Be careful, because this cmdlet takes entry in bytes per second (Bps), whereas network adapters are listed in bits per second (bps). Use the following cmdlet to set a bandwidth limit of 6 Gbps, for example:

Very often I do need to configure NIC teams with HP hardware with Cisco or Procurve networking infrastructure therefore I would like to share an general overview of the NIC HP teaming capabilities, general teaming algorithms and especially how to configure an Cisco or Procurve switches.

Because IP addresses are in decimal format, it is necessary to convert them to binary format. For example, an IP address of 1.2.3.4 (dotted decimal) would be 0000 0001.00000010.00000011.0000 0100 in binary format. The teaming driver only uses the last three bits (100) of the least significant byte (0000 0100 = 4) of the IP address. Utilizing these three bits, the teaming driver consecutively assigns destination IP addresses to each functional network port in its team starting with 000 being assigned to network port 1, 001 being assigned to network port 2, and so on. Of course, how the IP addresses are assigned depends on the number of network ports in the TLB team and how many of those ports are in a functional state (see Table 4-4).

Team members are the network adapters that the team uses to communicate with the switch. Team interfaces are the virtual network adapters that are created when you make the team. It can be hard to remember which is which since the team interfaces receive an IP address.

HP Proliant Network Adapter Teaming (NIC Teaming) allows Server administrator to configure Network Adapter, Port, Network cable and switch level redundancy and fault tolerance. Server NIC Teaming will also allows Receive Load balancing and Transmit Load balancing. Once you configure NIC teaming on a server, the server connectivity will not be affected when one of the Network adapter fails, Network Cable disconnects or Switch failure happens.

To configure NIC teaming on your Windows based HP Proliant Server, you need to download HP Network Configuration Utility (HP NCU). If you are using Windows 2012 Server Operating System on your HP Server, then you could not use HP Network Configuration Utility. We need to use the inbuilt network team software of Windows. Please install the latest version of Network card drivers before you install the HP Network Configuration Utility. In Linux, Teaming (NIC Bonding) function is already available and there is no HP tools which you need to use to configure it.

HP NCU is used for Network Teaming and it has a easy to use graphical interface. Using NCU, you can create and dissolve NIC/Network teaming. If you have not installed NCU on your server, you need todownload and install it from your HP Server driver download page. NCU is also included in HP Service Pack bundle. Once you download and install NCU, you need to launch the NCU to create a network team. So let let us see how to open Network Configuration Utility on your HP Server. You can open NCU in different ways.

By performing any of the above said methods, you can open HP NCU on your Server. As you can see from below provided screenshot, your Network Adapters will be listed in HP NCU. You can select multiple Network Adapters and click the Team button to form a network a teaming on your server.

In NFT team, you can group two to eight NIC ports and it will act as one virtual network adapter. In NFT, only one NIC port will transmit and receive data and its called as primary NIC. Remaining adapters are non-primary and will not participate in receive and transmit of data. So

As you have created NIC Teaming on your server, you may go ahead and assign a static IP to it Or you can leave the settings in default and your DHCP server will assign an IP automatically. You need to perform below provided steps only if you are setting any static IP for your NIC team. If you want to use DHCP, then you do not need to perform below said steps because your DHCP Server will automatically assigns new IP address to the Virtual NIC created by the teaming software.

What is NIC Teaming?NIC Teaming allows you to combine up to 32 network adapters and then use them as a single network interface. NIC Teaming provides redundancy, allowing network communication to occur over the combined network interface even when one or more of the network adapters fail. The combination of network adapters also increases the bandwidth available to the combined network interface. NIC Teaming is a feature that is available in the Windows Server 2016 operating system. Both the Hyper-V host and the Hyper-V virtual machines can use the NIC Teaming feature. A NIC team can contain only one network adapter, but when it has only one network adapter, the NIC team cannot provide load balancing and failover. Still, you can use a NIC team with only one network adapter in it for the separation of network traffic when you are also using virtual local area networks (VLANs).

The problem with upgrading from 2008 to 2012 with a server that already has the Intel Team already set up is that 2012 requires not only the unteaming of the NICs but the uninstallation of the Intel software. This is practically impossible to do. The closest instructions that we found were on the Intel website, and it was convoluted, confusing, and after spending 4 hours just on this, we are planning to reformat the hard drive and start from scratch. 2ff7e9595c
