At some point in time, you'll probably need to know where the engine serial number is on your Navistar engine. Having this number can help ensure that you're getting the correct diesel engine replacement parts when you shop.
The engine serial number for Navistar engines can be found stamped on a pad on the block. Navistar keeps the location pretty simple. For engines that were built before 2000, that pad can be found on the left side of the block, just under the head-to-block parting line. For engines newer than that, the pad is on the right side of the block, between the oil cooler and the top of the block.

For most Navistar engines that were built after 1993, you will need more than just the engine serial number. You will also need the engine model, model year, horsepower rating, and torque rating, which can all be found on the emission label. The emission label is located on the top of the rocker cover or intake manifold.
Engine serial numbers are incredibly important when you have a heavy duty diesel engine. If you have a heavy duty diesel engine, you probably already know that they dont follow the Make-Model-Year formula that automotive engines do. An engine thats a particular model is not guaranteed to be exactly the same as another engine of that same model. Engine serial numbers are a surefire way to get a list of the exact parts that are in your engine.
If youre ordering your parts over the phone, you can just tell your salesperson your ESN. If youre ordering online, you will see that some product pages have a field underneath the price where you can input your engine serial number when placing an order. If this field exists on a page, we will need your ESN. Even if you dont supply it when placing the order, youll still probably get a call or email from us asking for it. So, to get your order processed without delays, be sure to input it when you order.
The purpose of his inquiry to Harvester was to obtain, on behalfof all IHC collectors, a list of serial numbers and productiondates for Famous, Victor, Titan, Nonpariel and Mogul engines.Jahreis agreed to see that the list would be published in GEM sothat the information could reach as many collectors as possible ina single publication.
With her letter, Ms. Otten included a list of serial lettersassigned to Milwaukee Works output of engines and tractors by year(December 11, 1922), an alphabetical list of serial lettersassigned to engines and tractors, January 2, 1933, and a list ofserial letters assigned to Tractor works output of engines(December 20, 1922). In this issue, we are printing the entire text(25 typewritten pages!) of the Milwaukee serial nubmers, and wewill follow later with the Tractor Works list.
S&S serial numbers begin with the following manufacturing year codes. Year codes coincide with S&S Cycle's fiscal year, which starts October 1 of the previous calendar year. A product with serial number beginning with the letter "A" was manufactured in fiscal year 1978, between 10/1/1977 and 9/30/1978. "A" was reused in the year 2000.
Serial numbers for the Flx Clipper series (Clipper, Visicoach, Starliner) may be found inside the engine compartment - best viewed from the front, by removing the inner access door at the rear of the baggage room. Once this panel is removed, you will find "frame" members running at floor level along both sides of the opening. The top surface of the right-side frame member should have the serial number stamped on it, close to its rear end.
Information provided by Howard Pletcher. This is an updated version (June 29, 2004)There is little to decode from IH serial numbers. If you have a table of them, they do identify the time frame a truck was built in, but that is not hidden within the serial number. The system used depends upon what time frame you have in mind.
Serial numbers started over with SA501 with the A-models in 1957 and again with SB501 with the B-line in 1959. However, when the 1961 C-line was introduced, the serial numbers kept going with the SB numbers rather than starting over. This sequence continued until 10/65 when a new 13 digit VIN was introduced.
The VIN structure used from 10/65 until the start of the 1973 model production consisted of a 6 digit model code followed by a letter indicating the plant it was built in followed by a 6 digit serial number. The model code was a specifications code that basically meant what model the truck was sold as. There is some meaning to the codes if you have the code table to interpret them.
The plant code was a G for Fort Wayne, H for Springfield, C for Chatham, Y for San Leandro, and L for Bridgeport Metros, and the serial was a sequential number. Trucks were generally built in serial number order, but not exactly for numerous reasons. Example: 781956G200123
For the 1973 model year, the VIN was modified to consist of a 5 character model code, followed by a letter indicating the model year of production, the plant indicator, a production line within the plant indicator, and a 5 digit serial number that started with 10001 each year. The plant indicators were the same as above. The model year indicator was a C for 1972, D for 1974, etc. The production line was either Line A or Line B for Fort Wayne and Springfield and A for Chatham. The Scout line was always line D in Fort Wayne (there had been a C line for a time, but it was discontinued about 1970). C and D were used at Springfield when the A and B serial numbers passed 99999 and started over. Example: H0062HGD39515.
The SD220 is the engine model number. As for the truck VIN, I usually refer to my Crismon book. However, seems to have vanished when we moved last year. You could get onto our forums and ask there.

A vehicle identification number (VIN) (also called a chassis number or frame number) is a unique code, including a serial number, used by the automotive industry to identify individual motor vehicles, towed vehicles, motorcycles, scooters and mopeds, as defined by the International Organization for Standardization in ISO 3779 (content and structure) and ISO 4030 (location and attachment).[1]
The 10th to 17th positions are used as the vehicle identifier section or VIS. This is used by the manufacturer to identify the individual vehicle in question. This may include information on options installed or engine and transmission choices, but often is a simple sequential number. In North America, the last five digits must be numeric.
You can find the serial number by looking at the engine information plate. The Engine model information is important to accompany your serial number. Examples of engine model names are: 4JH3, 6LY2, 8LV, etc.
Volvo is notorious for changing engine parts in the middle of production model years. When they do this, they make a notation in their parts catalog stating what engine serial number ranges a product fits: "Fits up to and including engine serial number -3082419" or "Fits from engine serial number 3082420- onwards" or similar.
Volvo doesn't make their engines in the same factory as their car bodies (indeed, they make car bodies around the world, including here in the US), so the engines are crated up at their factory in Sweden and sent in batches to a car body factory to be installed in to cars. Thus, the safest way to track different versions/revisions of parts on these engines is by the engine's serial number, which this guide will help you find and read.
If you can't read your engine serial sticker/stamping, or if you're not sure which number on the sticker/stamping is your engine serial, someone with an active VIDA subscription (such as your Volvo dealer or IPD customer service) can often look up your engine serial number from your car's VIN. So, if you can't figure out your engine serial from the guide below, give us a call!
For the Volvos of the 1990s to mid 2000s with the "white block" inline-four, -five, and -six cylinder engines, Volvo puts the engine serial number in two places: a sticker on the upper timing cover and a stamping on an engine block surface. It is very common for the sticker on the timing cover to be missing or damaged but the stamping on the engine block is always there.
Volvo began to use a special compact variation of their venerable "white block" inline-five engine in their P1 and P3 platform cars. These have somewhat trickier to read engine stickers showing the engine family and serial number, but they're still there and still important for things like different tensioners or water pumps past a certain engine serial number.
On the compact fives, the engine serial number sticker has moved to the lower timing cover, sitting just above the crankshaft pulley and just below the engine mount. It's difficult to see in place because it's right next to the frame rail, but can be seen with either the right-side (passenger in the US) engine mount removed or through the right-side wheel well with the plastic wheel well liner pulled up.
One of the engineering "tricks" used to make these engines fit transversely in engine bays was to move belt-driven accessories like the water pump, alternator, and A/C compressor from the end of the engine to the sides via relay shafts and gears, making the whole engine shorter since it no longer needs a crankshaft pulley to drive those accessories via belts. Without a crank pulley or belt drive, the end of the engine block is nice and flat, and the engine serial and part number stickers are in these locations: 2ff7e9595c
